BOP Releases and Coffey County
The Federal Bureau of Prisons operates the federal prison system. It does not operate the Coffey County Sheriff's Office Kansas Detention Center. Research found no BOP institution within Coffey County, so Burlington should not be described as a federal prison release location. The federal system becomes relevant only when a court record, release sheet, detainer, destination entry, or other reliable fact points to federal custody.
A person can leave the Coffey County jail while remaining confined under another authority. Transfer to the U.S. Marshals Service, a federal contract bed, or BOP custody ends the local jail episode without creating a community release. In the opposite direction, a BOP record may show release from a federal sentence while leaving a separate Kansas, county, or immigration matter unresolved. The named custodian controls the meaning of each event.
| Record | Question it answers | Limit |
|---|---|---|
| Coffey sheriff release entry | When the county jail recorded a departure | Does not by itself prove where the person went |
| BOP locator result | Federal prison status and a reported federal release date | Does not cover every kind of federal detention |
| Federal court docket | Case orders, judgment, sentence, and later court action | May not show the exact physical exit time |
| USMS record route | Records within Marshals Service custody and functions | No public nationwide released-detainee name locator exists |
Search BOP Coffey Release Records
The official BOP Inmate Locator covers federal inmates from 1982 to the present. Number searches accept a BOP Register Number, DCDC number, FBI number, or INS number. A name search can use first, middle, and last name with age, race, and sex filters. A known number is the clearest route because names can be shared, misspelled, or changed.
- Choose the number tab when a federal identifier appears in the court or custody record.
- Otherwise enter the person's name and use the biographical filters to narrow possible matches.
- Compare the name, register number, age, race, and sex before relying on the result.
- Read the Location and Release Date columns together, and preserve the access date.
- Follow a doubtful result with the federal court docket or the agency that last held the person.
A historical result can display “Released” and a release date. BOP explains that when a listed date is in the past and no institution is shown, release occurred on that listed date. That statement is limited to the BOP record. It does not establish that all other custody, supervision, or legal obligations ended on the same day.
Note: Search the federal locator only when the Coffey County custody trail contains a genuine federal link.
BOP Coffey Federal Release Fields
The locator's result columns are Name, Register Number, Age, Race, Sex, Release Date, and Location. These fields help distinguish people with similar names and identify what BOP reports. They do not replace the underlying judgment, sentence computation, or release document. Copy each label exactly and avoid turning a blank or missing field into a conclusion.
The BOP locator record explanation documents these fields and the federal coverage limits.
The captured federal source shows why both the release date and location matter. A result is best treated as one part of a custody trail, then compared with the Coffey County record or federal case that supplied the federal connection.
- Register Number
- The BOP identifier used to separate one federal inmate record from another.
- Release Date
- The date reported for release from the federal prison record, subject to BOP's stated limits.
- Location
- The institution or release wording displayed in the locator result.
- Supervised release
- A court-imposed community term that can continue after confinement ends; it is distinct from release from BOP prison custody.
BOP Coffey Release Status Limits
“Not in BOP custody” is not the same as “free.” Federal pretrial detainees may remain under the U.S. Marshals Service and be housed in a local contract jail. Other people may be in Kansas custody, ICE custody, another county facility, or the community. BOP is mainly the prison system for sentenced federal inmates, not a complete public index of every person held under federal authority.
The locator is generally reliable from 1982 forward, while older records are incomplete. A no-result search can also reflect a spelling issue, a different name, a wrong identifier, a recent movement, or custody outside BOP's scope. The safe response is to return to the last verified record. If the Coffey County release sheet names a receiving agency, contact that agency. If a federal case exists, use its docket to identify the responsible court and custody stage.
Coffey Federal Release Court Checks
A federal defendant may move from arrest to USMS pretrial custody, a contract jail, sentencing, and later BOP designation. There is no equivalent public USMS nationwide locator for names of released pretrial detainees. That gap matters when the BOP search returns nothing even though the case is plainly federal.
Use PACER to review the relevant federal docket. Look for detention and release orders, the judgment, sentence, commitment, later sentence changes, and supervised-release proceedings. Court text can establish legal authority but may not capture the minute when a jail or prison completed processing. The U.S. Marshals Service FOIA page provides the official route for a properly scoped agency-record request when a releasable record is not available through the docket.
- Identify the federal court, case number, and defendant with care.
- Record the order or judgment that explains detention, commitment, or release.
- Compare the court date with the Coffey County exit and any BOP date.
- Ask the agency holding the missing record for that existing document, not for a new custody analysis.
Request BOP Coffey Release Records
A locator result is useful public evidence, but an agency-produced record is stronger when the exact event is disputed. Begin with enough detail to identify the correct person: full name, register number or other federal identifier, date of birth when appropriate, case number, relevant date range, and the specific document sought. A narrow request reduces confusion between BOP prison records, USMS detention records, and court files.
Ask for an existing release, movement, designation, or custody-status record within the receiving agency's control. For a sentence or release order, request the filed document from the federal court. For a Coffey County jail departure that preceded federal custody, request the county release sheet from the sheriff through the official records-request page. The county record and federal record should not be sent to the wrong custodian.

BOP Coffey Release Dates Change
BOP cautions that release dates can change after good-time recalculation or court action. A projected date should not be treated as an unalterable promise. Sentence credit, a corrected judgment, an appellate result, or another authorized change can affect the date shown. Preserve the exact wording and the day the result was viewed.
A past BOP release date answers when the federal prison record says confinement ended. It does not establish completion of a separately imposed federal supervised-release term. That term is set by the court and continues in the community under stated conditions. Likewise, a federal prison release does not dispose of a separate Coffey County case, Kansas sentence, warrant, or immigration action.
For a future date, use the Coffey County Release Date Lookup to distinguish an estimate from a confirmed event. For a completed federal event, compare the locator result with the judgment and any later docket orders.
Coffey BOP Records Stay Separate
Coffey County's newer Law Enforcement Center stands just west of the courthouse in Burlington and houses the Sheriff's Office, Emergency Dispatch, County Attorney, and jail functions. The close setting can make local sheriff and court follow-up convenient, but it does not merge their records. It also does not create a BOP office or federal prison within the county.
The sheriff's Law Enforcement Center update documented construction, while current county and sheriff materials place local law-enforcement functions at the Burlington complex. A county release sheet comes from the sheriff. A state court order comes from Coffey County District Court. A BOP result remains a federal record maintained nationwide.
This separation prevents a common mistake. Walking from the courthouse to the sheriff's office may help reconcile a local order and physical jail departure, but a federal sentence or BOP release must still be verified through the federal system. No local counter can certify a nationwide BOP record merely because the underlying person once appeared in Coffey County.
Confirm a Coffey Federal Release
Build the custody trail in time order. Start with the last verified Coffey County record and identify whether it reports release to the community, transfer, or only a departure time. Next, locate the federal case or identifier that supports a BOP search. Then compare the BOP status and date with the court judgment and later orders.
If the records disagree, do not silently choose one date. A court order can authorize release before physical processing ends. A sheriff timestamp can mark local departure before federal intake. BOP may later revise a projected date. Preserve each source, its wording, and its access date, then ask the office responsible for the missing event.
Can a blank BOP search prove release? No. It can mean the person is outside BOP scope, listed differently, held by another authority, or absent for another reason. Documentary confirmation should come from the agency that actually recorded the transfer or release.
